What is the best milk frother?

Hey everyone - What’s the best milk frother you’ve found? I’m thinking of buying one so I can prepare lattes and cappuccinos at home. I really want to make barista-style drinks in my own kitchen! There are so many different milk frothers out there and they can be pretty pricey so I want to make sure I’m getting the best one. Any suggestions?

The Souvia is definitely the best milk frother I’ve ever owned. It does exactly what you want: it makes incredibly warm, frothy milk in about a minute. You can precisely control the temperature and there are two interchangeable magnetic whisks, depending on whether you want frothy milk or smooth, steamed milk. I make frothy milk for cappuccinos, but my wife prefers smooth milk for lattes. We’ve had this unit for over a year now and I can’t imagine my mornings without it.

@Buddy Travers, can it froth enough milk for several drinks at once?

Absolutely, it’s one of the Souvia’s best features. You can heat up to 3 cups of milk in the carafe at a time, or half that if you’re frothing milk for cappuccinos.

I bought a Souvia to make espresso drinks, but I’ve also discovered that it has lots of other uses. It makes amazing hot chocolate, right in the pot! And when my sister comes over, she uses it to warm up milk for her toddler. You can set it to the exact temperature you want, anywhere up to 160 °F.

The Souvia milk frother is a great choice. It’s really handy that the machine beeps when the frothing is done and then shuts off automatically. The milk never sticks to the sides and never browns or burns. The best thing about it is that the jug is high-quality brushed stainless steel, rather than cheap aluminum with a toxic Teflon coating that flakes off, like other products I’ve seen.

I never knew that I needed a milk frother in my life until my mom got a Souvia and started whipping up all sorts of delicious hot drinks, including bulletproof coffee. It does a great job heating and frothing different kinds of milk, including 2%, soy, and oat milk, although whole milk makes the foamiest, most delicious froth! My husband isn’t big on foamy drinks but he likes putting steamed milk into his americano. Oh and it makes cold foam to layer on top of cold brew, too!

I think the Souvia looks really cool, and it’s incredibly easy to clean. The jug is dishwasher safe and the only extra parts are the cappuccino and latte disks, which are magnetic so they stay in place in the jug, or attach to the back when not in use. It’s much quieter than other milk frothers I’ve come across!

I’m obsessed with my Souvia milk frother. I’ve saved a fortune now that I can make Starbucks-style drinks at home. I’m hoping that our office manager will purchase one for the break room soon, so that I can make lattes at work.

I have a GRUNEN WOLKEN handheld milk frother and it does the job! It’s stainless steel and seems pretty well made. Having the little metal stand for storage is convenient. It’s a bit annoying that you have to hold down the power button the entire time, but other than that I don’t have any complaints.

I haven’t been able to make skim milk go frothy with the GRUNEN WOLKEN, but it works fine with whole or 2% milk. I’m not sure how it would work with soy or almond milk.

The motor is pretty powerful, so be careful not to accidentally pull the frother out while it’s still on, or you’ll have a big mess on your hands! I’d recommend frothing in a larger container rather than directly in your mug. Also, be prepared to replace the batteries pretty frequently.

If you’re just looking for a simple handheld milk frother, you might want to try the Bonsenkitchen. It doesn’t heat the milk, but you can use it to create foam in hot or cold milk. It works really quickly -- you can froth up your coffee in about 10 seconds. ... I like that the Bonsenkitchen is lightweight, simple to operate, and easy to clean (just don’t put it in the dishwasher!). Read more

If it’s working correctly, the Bonsenkitchen does a great job frothing milk, but I have to say that it’s not a durable product. I had one for a couple months before the shaft separated from the handle. I was tempted to just buy a new one ... since it’s so cheap, but I think I’ll go with something a bit more durable. Also, it would be nice to be able to heat and froth the milk simultaneously, so the Souvia or maybe the Aeroccino3 seem like better choices.Read more

Yeah, it’s not the sturdiest contraption, so be very careful when washing, drying, and storing it. I usually keep mine in the box to protect it. It would be nice if it could stand up on its own, but it has a rounded handle.

The Nestle Nespresso Aeroccino3 is a good option -- it’s the milk frother I’ve seen in most of the offices I’ve worked in. It has a sleek black and stainless steel design, and it doesn’t take up much counter space. It’s very easy to operate -- you just push the button for one second to make hot frothy milk, and two seconds (until the button turns blue) to make cold frothy milk.

Bella Dyer

Just a word to the wise … it definitely works best if you start out with very fresh, cold milk, even if you’re planning to heat it. The froth turns out much better that way. It’s kind of crazy but the brand of milk and how close it is to the expiration date can also make a big difference!

The Aeroccino3 seems to be most people’s go-to milk frother, but I’m not sure why. Maybe they haven’t seen what else is out there? The Aeroccino3 is quite pricey, but it doesn’t necessarily work any better than some less-expensive products I’ve used.

My parents have a Breville milk frother in their kitchen. My mom loves pretending to be a barista when I come over and it makes decent foam for cappuccinos.

Christy Bird

Overall I like the Breville, but I’ve found that when I try to froth a large amount of milk, it only manages to froth about a third of the jug, so I have to pour some out and do it a second time. Also, it makes a strange rattling noise in the morning which is pretty loud ... when other people in the house are still sleeping!Read more

@Christy Bird, it sounds like you might need to replace the plastic disks … they do wear out over time.

My boyfriend recently bought a HadinEEon frother for our kitchen, mainly to discourage me from spending $5 every morning at Starbucks. He’s made me some nice chai lattes and cappuccinos using this frother. It looks good on our countertop, kind of like a fancy electric kettle. ... So far it’s working fine… although I still prefer Starbucks!Read more

At first glance, the HadinEEon frother looks like a quality product, but after a few uses I discovered that it isn’t comparable to my old Nespresso frother. The base is quite flimsy and won’t lay flat without the pitcher on top. And it’s a pain to have to clean inside the pitcher every time it scalds the milk, which is pretty frequently.

Lucas Falk

Considering the price, I’m pretty disappointed in this appliance. After a few months, it stopped creating dense foam and simply heated the milk to a lukewarm temperature ... even when using whole milk ... and, of course, the correct frothing disk. I’ve had the same results, or better, with handheld frothers, which are a lot cheaper.Read more
