What is a TV Tuner? |
||||||||
A TV tuner allows one to receive signals on one’s television, and thus receive different channels. It converts signals into pictures and sounds. The oldest type of TV tuner was simply the dial type used in order to change channels. Sometimes in order to get certain cable channels or digital cable, one needs a special box purchased or borrowed from a cable company. This simple type of TV tuner is available in most TVs, or through most cable companies. However, many now refer to the TV tuner card, or exterior TV tuner that allows one to receive television programming on a computer screen. Essentially, the TV tuner can convert a computer to a television, and depending upon cable service, may allow one to watch a wide number of television stations. Many use a TV tuner to watch free television on their computer without using a cable service. Some countries broadcast programs for free. As well, some stations broadcast without encrypting information. So for example, a TV tuner might allow one to catch up on Irish television or watch American TV. Care is required when purchasing a TV tuner card or an exterior TV tuner. Not all tuners will work with all computer systems. Some are specifically designed for Macs or PCs, and many require additional software in order to view images. They may also require a certain amount of memory to run TV on your computer. Some argue that the TV tuner, especially at a computer desk is somewhat of a waste of money. If families, for instance, enjoy watching TV together, it may be somewhat uncomfortable to arrange a whole family around a computer desk. Watching off a laptop is probably best done by just one person, as the screen is much smaller. However, getting TV from a TV tuner seems a popular trend that is likely to continue. Especially with increasing numbers of laptops, a TV tuner may be a great purchase for people who live alone, for people who are on the road frequently, or for kids living in dorms. Since most laptops come with headphones, or one can easily purchase them, a person watching TV via a TV tuner on a laptop is not likely to annoy roommates. Some types of TV tuner will also catch FM radio signals, so they may make for a great way to listen to FM radio. However, it should be noted that many TV tuners are far more expensive than a simple radio.
