The poker player will often check the initial bets to the next player, or simply call low bets on the first one or two bets. This is the slow play. By the last or second to last bet, the player will then spring a big bet onto the table, forcing an opponent to match after putting a good deal of money in the pot already, or forcing them to concede the hand.

The bluff happens in poker when one player bets a lot of money on a mediocre hand. This strategy of winning at poker involves much more risk than the slow play. The bluff will find the poker player with an average hand, often a pair, or a bad hand without even a pair. The player will begin the betting early with a high bet, forcing opponents to consider whether he has a good hand. The player will match opposing bets with higher bets, and will continue putting money into the pot. This strategy will hopefully force others out of the hand due to the sheer amount of money gambled. If one opponent calls to the end, however, the bluffer does not have a good chance at winning, as the hand they started out was not very high to begin with.

Another strategy of winning at poker is the aggressive play. The aggressive play will see a poker player entering nearly every hand. With a chance to win on every hand, the number of hands that can be won is increased just by the chance of percentages. On the other hand, the aggressive player may lose more by entering more hands. The conservative player, when winning at poker, will only enter hands in which they have a good chance at winning. This type of poker player does not take many risks, and may miss out on many hands that might have been one, but when hands are played, they are won at a much higher percentage. Winning at poker, although it is a game of chance, can be helped by these basic strategies, and others.
